Letter to Court members, 12 July 2017

Alexis Mourre

President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration

The International Court of Arbitration of the ICC ("Court") informs you with great sadness that our beloved colleague and friend, Guillermo Aguilar Álvarez, passed away on 7 July 2017. Even though Guillermo’s passing leaves us with an immense void, we feel honored by the great legacy he left for us. For both the Secretariat and the Court, it was a great honor and privilege to count on Guillermo’s professional excellence and human qualities.

During his outstanding professional path, Guillermo held important positions with the Court, as Counsel in charge of the first Spanish-speaking team in 1985, when the Court had only 5 Counsel, until 1987, when he replaced Sigvard Jarvin as General Counsel. Guillermo left the Court in 1990 to dedicate himself to private practice.

Those who knew him know that he was always a visionary, constantly looking to innovate in the interest of the profession and of arbitration. Among the many projects he was involved in during his time with the Court, Guillermo implemented a database that to this day allows us to access excerpts of cases submitted to the Court and continues to contribute to the development of international arbitration. In addition, many of us were also fortunate enough to count on Guillermo’s professionalism and excellence when he left the Secretariat to pursue private practice as party counsel or arbitrator.

Even more important than his professional achievements were his many personal achievements. He was always concerned for those around him, a dedicated husband and father, a friend. His intelligence, sense of humor and wisdom will be forever remembered.

The passing of Guillermo Aguilar Álvarez is a loss to each of us, but the good times spent together and the many things learned from him will remain in our memory. The Secretariat and the Court join his family, especially his wife Andrea and his sons Patricio and Claudio, in this painful time and convey their most heartfelt condolences.
